How to Set Up Google Ads Call Tracking for Phone Leads

Google Ads Call Tracking: How to Track Phone Call Leads
Your Google Ads dashboard says eleven conversions last month. The front desk took sixty calls. Both numbers are right, and the gap between them is why plenty of Australian service businesses end up pausing the campaigns that actually work. Google Ads call tracking closes that gap. Once call reporting and website call conversions are running, the keywords that make your phone ring stop hiding behind the ones that only produce clicks.
Why do form fills make good campaigns look bad?
Because automated bidding chases whatever you feed it. If a submitted contact form is the only conversion action in the account, Smart Bidding learns to buy the searches that produce contact forms. Searches that produce calls get squeezed out week by week, even when those calls are the better lead.
Consider how differently the two intents behave. Someone comparing three physios for a niggling shoulder will happily fill in a form and wait a day for a reply. Someone whose hot water system died at 6am will not. They tap the number in the ad, and if you do not answer they ring the next business on the list. That second person is worth more and costs less to convert. In a form-only account they look like wasted spend.
The distortion compounds quietly. Keywords get paused, ad groups get cut, and over a few months the account optimises itself towards the low-urgency half of your market while the phone gets quieter.
How do you set up call tracking in Google Ads?
Two separate things need switching on. Call reporting measures calls made straight from your ads, and website call conversions measure calls made from your site by people who arrived through an ad. Most service businesses need both, and neither costs extra beyond the click you were already paying for.
Turn on call reporting at account level. Open Admin, then Account settings, then the Call reporting section. Google's call reporting documentation explains that this assigns a Google forwarding number to your ad so you can see call duration, start time and whether the call connected. Australia sits on Google's published list of countries where forwarding numbers are available, so this works locally. Google also states you are only charged when someone clicks the forwarding number shown in the ad, not when they manually dial it.
Add call assets to the campaigns where a phone call makes sense. Emergency, quoting and booking campaigns qualify. A campaign pointing at a whitepaper does not. Use your real business number here, and let the forwarding number handle the swap.
Create the call conversion action and set a minimum duration. Google's documentation notes the caller's phone number is reported for calls longer than 15 seconds, which tells you roughly where noise ends. Set the threshold at a length that reflects a genuine enquiry rather than a wrong number. Sixty seconds suits most trades. Ninety works better for a clinic where the receptionist takes booking details.
Install the phone snippet so website calls get counted too. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that matters most for businesses whose ads send traffic to a landing page. The snippet swaps your displayed number for a forwarding number only for visitors who arrived from an ad. If you run it through Google Tag Manager, the tag type is Google Ads Calls from Website Conversion, and Google warns that international formatting causes stray plus signs, so enter the national format without the country code prefix. The default JavaScript tag tracks one number per page, so a site with separate numbers per suburb page needs the manual approach.
Test it before you trust it. Google says it can take up to an hour for ads to become eligible for a new conversion action. Search for your own ad, click it (you will be charged), and check that the number on the page has changed. Running the test twice requires deleting the gwcc cookie from your browser first, otherwise the cached number makes it look broken when it is not.
What changes once Google Ads call tracking is live?
Your reported cost per lead usually drops within a fortnight, because you are finally counting leads you were already receiving. Then the rankings reshuffle. Keywords you were about to cut turn out to carry half the phone volume, and the ad group that looked strongest turns out to be full of researchers who never ring anyone.
At Searchline we check this before touching a single bid when we inherit an account, because reordering the winners changes every decision that follows. Give the data three or four weeks before you act on it. Bidding algorithms need volume, and one busy Tuesday is not a trend.
The other benefit is diagnostic. If people ring and never book, or land and never ring, that is a page problem rather than a bidding one, and no amount of budget will fix it. Send the same events into your analytics as well so you can see the full path instead of the last click. Our guide to GA4 conversion events covers the tagging side of that.
Do you need to worry about call recording?
Less than most people expect. Google's help documentation on call recording settings states that call recording and AI-qualified call conversions are currently only available for calls involving phone numbers in the United States and Canada. Australian advertisers get duration, timing and connection data instead of audio.
Third-party call tracking platforms are a different matter, since many of them do record. If you use one, check the OAIC's small business guidance to work out whether the Privacy Act applies to your business, and remember that recording a conversation also brings state surveillance devices laws into play. A short notice at the start of the call is the standard fix, and it costs you nothing.
Common questions
Will a Google forwarding number hurt my local SEO?
No, because the swap only happens for visitors who arrived through your ads. Everyone else sees your real number. Google does state that forwarding numbers remain Google property and can be changed or reassigned, so never put one on your Google Business Profile, your invoices or any directory listing.
How many calls do I need before the data means anything?
Enough that a quiet week does not swing the result. For most small accounts that is thirty to fifty tracked calls, which might take a month. Resist the urge to pause a keyword after four days of silence, especially in trades where demand arrives in bursts.
Open your account and count how many conversion actions currently measure a phone call. If the answer is zero, every optimisation decision you have made this year was based on half your leads.
